Hi all, my sons started their second year in High School in January. They
took great pleasure in showing me the beginning of Chapter 3 of their
Science textbook, ""Focus on Junior Certificate Science" written by A Darwin
and L du Toit which focuses on child care. I thought you might enjoy the
opening sentences, which read: "The first link between the mother and her
new baby is feeding. Most women are able to feed their baby from their own
breast milk. This is called suckling .. (column l then features picture of
mother breastfeeding and smiling down at large fat 6 month-old, column 2
shows diagram headed 'Advantages of breastfeeding' showing centre circle
BREAST IS BEST with arrows to 'Bond between baby and mother', Hygienic (free
from germs)', 'Supply increases with baby's demand', 'Balanced diet',
'Protection from disease', 'Quick and easy', 'Right temperature') .. There
are many advantages of breastfeeding." Then follows a homework project,
"ACTIVITY l Breast is Best. Look at the outline diagram in Figure .. It
gives a summary of the advantages of breast feeding. Use this information
to write a paragraph in your book about breast feeding or to draw a poster
to advertise breast feeding in an antenatal clinic."

Isn't this great? This is part of the curriculum for all high schools in
Zimbabwe. I particularly like the way this is the *first* piece of
information on child care - getting our priorities right at last!
