Hi Kathleen,

Yes, definitely have seen a relationship btn deep suctioning, visualization
of the larynx & subsequent refusal to bf. Usually happens when baby is put
to breast immediately after the suctioning so the juxtaposition of the two
events remain firmly embedded in the baby's mind. Somehow, the breast no
longer is comforting, but is related to the trauma experienced. I suspect
that rather than putting the baby to breast or putting the baby in the
nursery, the baby should be given to the mom to hold skin to skin, lights
dimmed, and an opportunity for "bonding" (excuse the word...) without
attempting to bf unless the baby is showing signs of interest. This puts no
pressure on mom who may have had the hellacious birth, and gives some time &
space between suctioning and bf.
