 Hi Winnie (and friends)
Thanks for your post on the horrible time many mothers who exclusively
bottle feed EBM to their babies often face. Of course our role as health
professionals (who deal with individula mothers) is to support mothers in
what ever choices they make (even/especially when they involve compromise).
My concern is with public health and public health messages, public health
policies. I think that it is criminal that so many mothers (who understand
that human milk is important for their baies and desperately want to provide
it for their babes) find so little support for their efforts to breastfeed
(and often live in a society that is openly hostile to breastfeeding and/or
to breastfeeding supportive behaviours) that they are forced to compromise
and bottle feed EBM. I agree that most mothers don't choose to do it - and
it combines all the hardest things about breastfeeding with all the hardest
things about breastfeeding - and these mothers need support. I guess what I
am saying is that 'support' should not include normalising this practice -
or pretending that it is not a compromise (in many case a really good
comprmise, granted). And that is the very tight rope we as health
professionals must tread.
