Hi all,
I am a new lactation consultant in a small rural hospital (studying to
sit for the IBCLC this year)..and have two questions for you all.
What research based articles would you suggest for co-sleeping? I had a
lovely conversation with a physician, (over a circumcision..non the less)
about Dr McKenna's work. Since I live in Wisconsin, we also discussed the
news story about co-sleeping that took place in Milwaukee. He was very open
to working with me on teaching safe cosleeping, if I could get him relevant
research. Currently all our discharge instructions very clearly speak to no
cosleeping, with this physician being the most adamant about it. So this is
a wonderful opportunity.
Also, nipple shields use is an issue I am trying to address. They are
currently handed out by a select few rather regularily. I am doing a brief
breastfeeding inservice, monthly, at each staff meeting, and have been
addressing different key issues, to get breastfeeding off to a good start,
to help prevent this regular use. A culture shift needs to happen. :) But
it is time to develop a protocol specific to this issue and I have some
wonderful physician support in this area. So again, what research is there
that I can use and does anyone have specific nipple shield protocols in
place they would be willing to share with me? You can email me privately if
you want.
I am blessed to work in a setting, in which, I wear many hats..labor and
delivery nurse, postpartum nurse..childbirth instructor..so can impact our
breastfeeding practices through many channels. Also, the support of staff
and physicians, is a huge plus. So thanks in advance for your advice and if
these issues have been addressed in previous emails, forgive me asking
again. I am currently AT work and dont' have the time to research the
archived emails.
