Valerie says:
"I have never seen an ad by a particular
infant formula company that compares itself against another infant
formula. I
don't watch alot of TV so I may have missed that media. But in
print media, I
have never read an ad by an infant formula company that specifically
states
that their product is better than another infant formula company's."

I have seen such ads in both parenting magazines and in professional
journals. They generally pick out one or two ingredients and
compare themselves with human milk and their promary AIM competitor
to show how theirs is "closer to breastmilk" than their AIM
competitor. Of course, the other company does the same thing with
different ingredients. And it certainly is no surprise that none of
these ads make any attempt to give a complete listing of human milk
"ingredients" as that would really shed the light on where they come
short. (And all this assumes that "milligrams vs milligrams" is the
only difference.)

There really is competition. A number of years ago when I worked as
a floor nurse in OB, one patient I had was the wife of the Enfamil
rep. As they were packing to go home, I jokingly asked if they
wanted a Similac bag. He did not see it as a joke and was very
angry that I suggested it.!

She did breastfeed (with suplements from time to time-after all it
really doesn't make a difference) and it was really a challenge for
me whenever he made his "rounds". He tried to use the fact that I
had been her nurse as an "inroad" and wanted to act as though that
made me his "buddy". I really had to watch everything I said to be
sure it wasn't something he could turn around as endorsing any of
his actions on the unit!

Winnie
