Personally I am allergic to the word 'fussy' when applied to someone who
doesn't have verbal language. I see it as more normative than calling it
'baby wanting to be with you' or 'baby seems hungrier than usual' or even
'unsettled'. 'Fussy' carries negative connotations for me, and some people
may respond to such a label by trying to correct their baby's attitude by
refusing to comfort it, rather than by responding to what is almost
certainly a physiological need in a very young child.
I went to my bookshelf and got out the Breastfeeding Triage Tool, one of my
very favorite references because it is so easy to use. Chapter 2 is on
parameters for normal breastfeeding infants. Under 'weight gain' I found
the following text, repeated in each age section, 0-6 weeks, 6 wk-3 mos, 3-6
mos, and 6-12 mos:
'There may be times when the infant seems hungrier than usual or nurses more
frequently. This is normal and can be expected.' (Thank you, authors Sandra
Jolley, Ellen Phillips-Angeles, and llana Chertok!)
Under 'feeding frequency' it says that 'Frequency increases temporarily
during growth spurts' but that is the only place such a thing is mentioned.
It also says it's ok to nurse for comfort. (I know, doh, but it's probably
a Good Thing that this appears in a book meant for health professionals.)
