Just a cautionary tale about the value of scales - an infant in my practicee yesterday who mom swore was doing well - but a pound under birth weight at a month (my first time seeing). ON the breast very audible, huge gulps for about 3 minutes. Actual weight gain: 6 mg! Repeat on opposite breast: 2 mg! I have learned that counting swallows, audibility are not accurate so I ALWAYS use a scale when there's a question of milk transfer. Sometimes it reassures, sometimes it alarms. It is a tool as we have said often on lactnet to be used to verify or deny what we observe with other measurement tools such as eyes and ears. And accuracy is important.

Thanks, Ami. Really, it's just to have a number that records the direction in which things are going - not to record the weight gain of a single feeding (or even usually a day). I also really appreciate the message that it sends about scales and measures generally - that they're only confirming what we've already observed in the baby (hopefully!).
