Diane, my LLL co-Leader has arthrogryposis. She is slightly disabled and I
have become somewhat educated about this condition through knowing her. She
has given birth to two wonderful little girls. During her second pregnancy,
the maternal fetal medicine specialist she was seeing indicated her baby
could be at increased risk for developing arthrogryposis. The baby was
actually diagnosed with this condition based on several ultrasounds.
However, when the baby was born, she did not have arthrogryposis. (Although
she was subsequently diagnosed with torticollis and this led to her having
physical therapy.)

Do you know the basis for the prenatal diagnosis of this baby?

My co-Leader's main concern for her baby when she thought the baby had
arthrogryposis was to minimize mother/baby separation, particularly if the
baby had to go to the NICU. When my co-L was born, she spent many weeks in
the hospital alone since there were other children at home and her parents
lived in another town. I believe my co-Leader consulted with an orthopedist
to discuss options for the baby's care if she were to have needed to go to
the NICU.

If you would like the contact information for my co-Leader, please write to
me offlist and I can give that to you.
