The nerves that make the lower face expressive are missing in these
children.  There was a recent (last couple of years) Seattle newspaper
article about a little girl who underwent 2 surgeries to implant nerves to
her mouth so that she could smile.  It was successful and she is very happy.
She had to do lots of practice in the mirror as using the muscles over and
over to look like a smile had to be learned.  She especially did not like
the comments from strangers who kept telling her to not be so sad/grumpy and
just smile.  She would have if she could have.
