hi Meg,
there are several good studies about beer as a galactogogue. It has this
reputation, but what the studies have shown is that although beer increases
prolactin levels, most babies will consume LESS milk after mom has had a
beer (or other drink containing alcohol). Then after the alcohol has been
metabolized off, babies often have a "rebound" period in which they consume
more milk than usual. It is thought to be this "rebound" milk consumption
that leads to a slight increase in supply, and which is probably responsible
for beer's reputation as a galactogue.

Subject: Prescribing

The discussion about LC s suggesting and not prescribing medications
interested me because in preparation for the exam I am studying the
complimentary therapies angle. How do the use of herbs fit into this? I
see a lot of references to sage tea and fenugreek yet Lawrence never
mentions Sage (and specifically there is no mention of it in the table
of safe teas while breastfeeding) and has serious cautions about
Fenugreek. I am just wondering where is the evidence about the
complimentary therapies that are considered within the realm of the LC,
and are therefore included on the exam? Given the risks of
misidentification, adulteration and variations in potency how can we
safely suggest any of these products? I am not trying to be
inflammatory, I just have NO background in complimentary therapies and
am trying to understand where they stand, and where I stand if I pass
this exam. Beer is another one I don t understand. I read it is a
galactagogue, but it can increase the risk of a yeast infection plus the
effects of the alcohol on mum and baby. So therefore do we say beer is
a galactagogue, inform mums of the hazards, and allow them to make a
decision, or is the jury decided that the risks are far greater than the
benefits so we don t mention it?
