Ruth,
It's nearly 10 years old now, but Maureen Minchin wrote a wonderful
commentary for JHL (J Hum Lact 7(4), 1991) called "Smoking and Breastfeeding:
an Overview." In it she said, "To date, there is little evidence of harm to
the infant from breastmilk exposure to tobacco constituents alone." (Has
there been any new research to suggest otherwise?) She concluded with,
"Clearly, it is not ideal to smoke and breastfeed. But it is worse to smoke
and not to breastfeed." I agree! By the way, she has 54 references listed.
