I'm glad McDonald's didn't try to kick me out last week; clearing up the
situation would have taken me away from a birthday party with 25 six and
seven year olds!
I like Gonneke's suggestion. "Nurse-ins" are one of the best acts of
public education. We've done it in a mall, here. The best thing is, the
mom who was told off gets to go back and is visibly supported by other
breastfeeding moms. This support aspect is so important -- that's why I
feel a tad uncomfortable at the idea of individual advocacy. I, for one,
have often gone off to sob when people said mean things to me rather
than confront, although usually when I'm calm I'll write it down, or
address it next time.
Our prized Leader Applicant was told by her doctor's receptionist today
that the best way to prevent another bout of mastitis in her
fifteen-month-old was to wean. She didn't know what to say because she
was caught off guard, just like the mom we've been posting about. She
also needed to talk through it. This is an exceptionally well-prepared
mother; her own mother was a LLL leader and she herself was nursed well
into childhood; her mother dealt with this same nurse, apparently
without any problems. But her mom's away on holidays. I'll let you know.
Is everyone dealing with this right now? I was told recently I couldn't
bring my nursling to a theatre because they had a "no babies in arms"
policy. (Decided not to fight because I didn't want to subject my other
four, active children to people who obviously didn't want any noise or
commotion or, I guess, cuteness of any sort.)
Who else is being told to stay away from places because they're
breastfeeding or just have babies in their arms/slings?
Jo-Anne, who has a long history of denial and avoidance of confrontation
