I just received a call from an employee at our Adult Ed Center. She went
to a workshop last week and a speaker from south Florida lectured on
learning disabilites. She supposedly lectures throughout the state. She
stated that breastfed children were at a greater risk for learning
disabilites since toxins are stored in fat and that passes on through the
breastmilk. This caller is a big advoate of breastfeeding, has 4 children
she breastfed for a total of 14 years. But she was quite distressed that
this speaker was giving out this information. She talks to people all the
time on all the benefits of breastfeeding and this presentation was news to
her. There was a comment about IQ and she of course stated they might have
a higher IQ but still have learning disabilites. The speaker also stated
that tunafish was a very big culprit because of the mercury. I did explain
to the caller that toxins can accumulate, but when counseling mothers
regarding weight loss you would encourage them to lose at a slow rate for
this reason.
My question is has anyone heard of this? Has anyone in South Florida heard
of these lectures. This women is very interested in finding out more
information to pass on to the speaker and to her clients. I told her I
would ask all you wonderful people out there if you could shed some light
on this topic. Before I hung up I asked her if any of her children had
learning disabilites. NO! they are all in gifted programs, make great
grades and have no hint of learning disabilites. I had to ask!
Thanks everyone for being there and this wonderful resource.
