Subject: warming milk in the NICU

I have a quick question for those of you who work in NICUs.  How does your
unit warm breast milk that is in a syringe, that will be fed over a pump,
or by straight gavage?  Do you warm it or not?  Do you warm it in a
separate bottle/container, or in the syringe?  We are just looking for
better practices.

When I was in the NICU with my son, the refrigerated or frozen milk was
warmed in its storage container, a plastic cup with an orange lid. It was
placed in a warm water bath and swirled. The milk was drawn into the syringe
from the original storage container after the milk was warmed.

I tried to provide fresh warm milk at each feeding once I got into the swing
of the routine. It seems that fresh warme milk from the mother makes the
most sense whenever possible.
