Thanks Teresa, I haven't seen this baby nurse lately, so you may very well
be right. I think now, though that this is another case of not getting as
much from a pump with continued use. I'll know more if mom will come in.
She has had her thyroid levels checked and is awaiting the results. She
would have come in this week, but she is sick. She works full time outside
the home and is now having to supplement with 4oz of formula per day (She is
able to pump all but 4oz of what baby needs the next day). Baby nurses
often at night. Mom states that baby seems contented after feeds at night.
So the more I think about it, the more I think the pump just isn't doing it
for her as much anymore. I've asked her to bring in her pump when she comes
so I can check the suction pressures. We've already gone over ways to
increase amounts pumped.
Another mother I worked with, with a 6 month old, started seeing the same
low production with the pump and we discovered it was the pump (which was
only 4 months old). New (replacement) PNS and better volumes.

So, I don't know. I will update when I have more info.
Thanks to all who responded,

Subject: Re: decrease in milk production at 4 months

It sounds as though the baby is nursing sometimes and the baby is getting
bottles at other times. I'm assuming that while she was away, the baby was
getting bottles for at least 24 hours straight, and I wonder if this baby's
latch has deteriorated a bit as a result so that he is not extracting milk
as effectively, and that's causing the milk supply to drop. I have seen this
happen on occasion with other babies, where having bottles for a weekend or
even sometimes a single day will affect the baby's latch quite
significantly. Have you seen this baby nurse?
