Dear Linda,
You wanted to know if baby could have bloody stools as allergy symptom
when only receiving colostrum. Yes, babies can have any of the allergy
symptoms if mom consumed a lot of whatever the problem food is while she was
pregnant, because it both predisposes the baby and also gives him a body burden of
the allergen at birth.
Both of my children were extremely allergic to dairy protein. My poor
first-born--his mother (me) was told 24 years ago to drink at least 4 glasses
of milk each day to be sure the baby had strong bones. I *loved* milk, and
it was quite easy to follow this advice, as well as throw in extra cheese on
sandwiches, ice cream for dessert, etc. Poor baby came out screaming and just
did not stop for the first two months, until I learned what the problem was.
(He screamed so much his grandmothers were both afraid of him and would not
help me with his care.) When he was two years old, I happened to be at the
family clubhouse and it turned out that a nurse who worked at the hospital where my
son was born also had a clubhouse in the same clubgrounds. My son fell and
hurt his knee, and when he started crying and arching his back as I tried to
comfort him, she watched this and exclaimed, "Oh my gosh--I remember him from
the nursery! I would do that and I thought i would drop him!" Considering all
the babies she had to have seen over the ensuing two years, I thought it was
pretty telling that she could remember him.
Having discovered the source of his problem, I avoided all dairy like
it was poison during my second pregnancy. Although my daughter did still have
an allergy to dairy, it was much slower to develop (as I allowed myself small
"treats" after she was born, thinking there would be no problem because I
hadn't predisposed her during the pregnancy--we had much to learn about allergies
in breastfed babies 21 years ago), and she was born a calm baby.
So yes, if you have a very sensitive/allergic baby, and the mother
consumed enough of the offending food during pregnancy, you could definitely see
allergic reactions in the baby's first 24 hours.
