Hi Jay,
I agree with you that understanding the needs and limitations of those you
might wish to encourage to participate in conferences is extremely
important!
I'm an academic but by university position is an honorary one and so
financial considerations with conference costs are also important to me (oh
to have someone paying me to go to a conference!). I know that conference
fees are a big issue for many volunteers such as LLLL and ABA
counsellors/CEs. I can't tell you how impressed I was to see that the NZLCA
conference had a very substantially discounted conference rego for LLLL. It
shows that they are committed to valuing the work that volunteers do and to
encouraging them in their work. So a bouquet to the conference organising
committee!
My conference rego "allowance" for the year has been taken up by a
conference I'm speaking at next weekend ($350 for one day, no speakers
discount!). I'm speaking at it because I want to give the participants some
info that I think they badly need to have, rather than because the speaker
line up excites me....alas and alack other conferences that I really would
like to hear the talks at will have to fall by the wayside!
