I also have a little one that experiences night time difficulties. They
began when he was about 4 months old. I don't know if that coincided with
his being put on his own in a crib (was following the advice of my
non-parent sister. I was so uninformed at the time).

The episodes have decreased conciderably in the last few years, my boy is
now 4 years old. Interestingly enough I too made the connection of having a
very busy day and the onset of of night wakening (can't really call it
nightmare or terror. It is like he is acting out his dream and telling
everyone to go away).

I discovered the wonders of RR (rescue remedy) during the midwifery assisted
birth of my second child. I couldn't believe this stuff existed. I take it
when the days are getting a little to harried for my nerves, and when the
boys are having a stress moment. But the RR has made a big difference to the
night situation. Instant calm (right after he tries to spit it out and tell
me to go away). He wimpers a bit more then goes back to sleep, waking
refreshed in the morning and ready to go.
