Hi All,
Question for you...
What would cause delayed MERs?
Here is the story:
Mom with 3rd baby, almost 6 mo old. Started noticing that MERs did not
occur with each feed. Sometimes the MER would happen within the first few
minutes of BF, or it would take several minutes (like 5 or more) or not at
all. She is not stressed out (though being a mom with 3 kids....), home
life is fairly easygoing. Stay at home mom, kids are 3, and 12 and the
baby. (sounds like me, huh? Nice gal tho, we are becoming friends as we
have a lot in common!)
WHen the MER doesn't happen at all, baby gets irritated, pushes at breast,
pulls away with breast still in her mouth, as if all the gymnastics will
elicit a let-down. Sometimes the baby will just give up and come off the
breast 'till the next feed. Mom has tried conscious relaxation, visualizing
her breasts letting the milk go when she realizes that nothing is happening.
Sometimes this works well, sometimes only so-so (kind of a minor, almost
let-down, but not a "full" let-down), sometimes not at all.
Baby is gaining well, on no solids, otherwise a very happy little girl.
Any ideas here? She did not have this problem with her other kids. Oh, the
3 yr old is still BF once in a blue moon. Mom would just as soon she stop,
but is willing to let her continue as long as she wants. There is never a
problem with an MER with the toddler. In case this you are wondering, the
baby is a joy to the mom who just can't get enough of this kid! So there
are no underlying emotional "stuff's" going on with the baby.
Any ideas or thoughts will be appreciated. I am stumped, quite frankly, and
so is the mom.
TIA!
