I am a midwife living in New Zealand and soon running a workshop on cup
feeding. I have discovered a bit of healthy disagreement about whether
there is nipple confusion at all? Apparently Chloe Fisher says not-does
anyone know where? I do not have a lot of experience with problems of
breast
feeding these days-not for any reason other than my client base is of women
who
choose a single caregiver for pregnancy,birth and postnatal for 6 weeks.
They are generally well motivated and get well prepared before the birth
and have only one caregiver afterwards. However when I heard about cup
feeding 5 years ago on a video from Nairobi I was thrilled to have a
means of avoiding nipple confusion. I have used it three or four times
since-two for giving a slow to latch baby a bit of EBM whilst waiting for
some enthusiasm and once with an utterly uninterested 37 weeker for 2-3
weeks, this nearly drove the parents mad because it was messy and
wasteful of her expressed milk. The other was a full term ,small infant
who was very sleepy and the parents finally decided to use a bottle. So
although I have used it on those occassions I have needed an alternative
it has proven useful for the one off events rather than long term. If you
have some answers I would love to hear them.
