Most forms of radioactive iodine stick around a long time, and iodine is
concentrated in breast milk (it's usually in short supply in non-marine
environments, and the breast makes sure baby gets enough this way). Mom
would be advised not to even cuddle her baby near her neck while she's
on treatment. There's also the risk of having all the radioactivity in
her breast tissue if she has the treatment before her breasts completely
involute, which can take some time.

Could she have the surgery now, and delay the radioactive iodine
treatment until after the baby weans?
