Jeannette, my sympathies, sometimes it's especially hard to convince people
living in hot climates that "just breastmilk" provides sufficient fluids and
that extra water is *not* required. I have a WHO Update, No. 9 August 199l
entitled "Breast-feeding and the Use of Water and Teas" which sets out the
whole thing nicely, covering (1) Exclusive breast-feeding in early infancy:
prevalence, (2) Risks associated with supplementary intake of water and/or
teas in early infancy and (3) Fluid requirements during the first 6 months
of life. Also shows a summary of studies (with six references) on the water
requirements of exclusively breast-fed infants in Argentina, Israel, India
(2 studies), Jamaica and Peru with temps ranging from 20 - 41 degrees C and
relative humidity from 9 - 96%, ages of babies <l - 6 months, urine
osmolarity etc. Let me know if you want a copy. Best wishes.
