I was brought up short one time by a mom I was seeing in the hospital -- when
I gave her my usual spiel about newborns needing to nurse at least 8 times in
24 hours -- preferably more -- she emphatically said that "none of my babies
ever nursed any more than 5 times a day. And they gain weight just fine.
Period." I can't believe anything was in the days before Ezzo, but yes, this
was. And her babies gained just fine on 5 feeds a day. Whether she had a
huge storage capacity or 30 cal/ounce milk, I don't know. But that's the way
it was.

I agree that Donna's case, however, sounds really scary. It's my NSHO that
if you have to peel apart disposable diapers to see if they are truly wet,
then they aren't wet ENOUGH.

If by day 4 to 5 (at the very latest), a baby isn't voiding at least 5 to 6
GOOD WET diapers a day, and stooling at least 3 scoopable poops a day, then I
want to see them just to make sure everything is going ok. Especially if the
baby is one of our "just a little early" ones.
