Hi Jaye,
Robin here...Sorry you are having a really bad day....Just a few thoughts..
One the one about discontinuing breastfeeding for jaundice... Sometimes, the
docs and even Jack Newman suspend bf for 24-48 hrs so that the jaundice
gets under control. I would advice mom to pump of course and save the milk.
Unfortunately, the few rare cases of Breastmilk jaundice, or Jaudice whatever
the cause, can cause brain damage if left to go too high. Then they have to
do a blood transfusion yada, yada. I'm sure you have heard about this. But,
if jaundice is really high and not coming down, and their is reasonable cause
that it is breastmilk jaundice it is prudent to suspend bf for 24 hours. I have
never had a doctor tell them to stop completely. They re-check the next day
because they want the baby back at the breast...I'm sorry I don't know the
particulars about this case. Have seen bb's get very sick and need
transfusion before from jaundic, however it is rare. We don't have orders for
Moms to feed their newborns. I'm really confused on that one. When a mom
comes to L & D in labor, we ask "Are you gonna breast or bottle feed)? end of
story. Most of the nurses do put babies skin-skin right after birth unless a
baby is blue and floppy. They are cared for right next to mom not taken to
nsy unless its life or death. I guess it comes down to the hospital, and the
staff. and we are going baby friendly... yeah! hopefully, that will cheer you
up. One step at a time. Please don't bang your head anymore. I wish you
could come to my hosp with someone you know who is giving birth. I think
you would be pleasantly surprised.

Take good care,
robin
