Hello all!

I have heard about a mother who breastfeeds her 2 months old baby with
kidney hypoplasia (I am not sure if this medical term is correct, babys
kidneys are very small). The baby is doing quite fine on his own, no
dialysis for now on but have problems with eating. The mother is
breastfeeding and pumping extra for the supplementing and the baby has a
nasogastric tube because he is not eating enough according MDs. From what I
know about small children with kidney failures, not eating enough is a
typical problem.

But my question is: can this baby continue breastfeeding if he needs a
kidney transplant (and needs it when he is still nursing)? I searched the
archives and found and checked several posts: found the story about a child
with liver transplant and how MDs thought breastfeeding was the cause of
rejection and destruction of the new organ, one anecdotal story where some
breastfeeding could continue after transplant surgery and about research
which stated that breastfed had better outcomes after organ transplants and
how some MDs give ebm to transplant patients. Could the antibodies of the
breastmilk be a risk to the new kidney? What I would need now is
references. Thank you.

Best wishes,
