Marit has asked if Nestle supports baby clubs in other countries. In the US, Nestle's baby club is called the Very Best Baby at www.verybestbaby.com. There is a special notice on this site that it is intended for US residents only: "Nestlé S.A. endorses and complies with both the letter and the spirit of the World Health Organization (WHO) International Code of Marketing of Breast-Milk Substitutes in developing countries, including standards for product integrity, labeling, distribution and promotion." Nestle limits its definition of the Code to affecting its business only in developing countries, so everywhere else anything goes. The Code is meant for all countries of the world and does not differentiate between developing and developed nations. That is Nestle's interpretation and spin so it can violate the Code with abandon.

This website bribes mothers with the following if they join the club:

FREE baby care booklets

FREE calls with our pediatric nutritionists and infant feeding experts

FREE recipe cards and weekly menus

FREE online tools, videos, audio podcasts, and articles at verybestbaby.com

FREE e-mail newsletters packed with age-specific tips

Money-saving checks for NESTLÉ® GOOD START® formulas

Savings and offers on baby products from our partners

Everything a new mother could want or need. These clubs are used to position the company as a trusted friend and as a free source of information and support. There is a section on breastfeeding information with the first topic entitled "Baby's indifference to breastfeeding." Nestle is working hard in the US to entice hospitals into giving out their discharge bag. We need to work harder to help mothers understand that nothing on these sites is free. They pay for all of this "free" stuff through the inflated cost of the formula that they purchase.
