Dear Tiffany,

Lately I have had a rash of temporarily non-latching babies who have
had to be supplemented. The moms all eventually settled on bottles,
because the Lactaid or whatever was just too much trouble to keep up.
I advised them all to use Dee Kassing's bottlefeeding technique (search
"Kassing" at kellymom.com), and the ones who desired to nurse at the
breast are seeing fairly smooth transitions. Where there is no
physical abnormality, I'd say the transfer takes from a few days to a
week at most, with the longer times involving getting off a nipple
shield, too.

My experience is fairly limited, but it seems to me that when babies
are bottlefed with that technique, so it is a good bit of work for them
to feed, they will happily switch over, provided mom has a good supply.
When the supply is not there, it is much harder, and in some cases,
frankly impossible, because the baby has no reason to nurse except
comfort, and that doesn't seem to be enough.

For a working mom, if breastfeeding gets off to a good start, and she
waits a few weeks to give bottles/pacifiers and nurses freely when not
at work (including at night) she will likely be just fine. Baby will
be able to adjust to the fact that sometimes food comes in a different
container.
