<< She told me that she suspected her continued nursing was contributing to
her
difficulties with articulating certain sounds and she encouraged me to wean.
I did wean -- from speech therapy. My almost 6 year old, however, is still
nursing and can enunciate everything but her "r's, which is
age-appropriate - and, I think, very cute:)>>

There is a speech therapist who attends my LLL Meetings, and she has been
telling the mothers to wean before a year, due to speech difficulties the
child can develop. Trying to mop up her bad information, without taking away
her "authority" as a speech therapist. I'm sure that in this area, she has
never met a child who nursed beyond 6 months, let alone a year.

I have noticed, however, a number of children (6 out of 10 at my daughter's
busstop) whose language is very difficult to understand, and 2 of the
remaining 4 have been in speech therapy. None of these children were
breastfed, but all of them used those "sippy cups" with the diaphragm, where
they had to SUCK to get anything out of the cup. At the time, I was
frustrated that my children could never figure out how to use them, but now,
I'm wondering if the sippy cup is what is causing the speech difficulties.

nursing! >>

That is cute :o)

Best wishes from rainy Ohio,
Heather "Sam" Doak
