I have been contacted recently by a woman who has had tubular breast disease
with breast reconstruction completed in early adulthood. She has since had
four children. She never saw a lactation consultant for counseling on her
ability to breastfeed or produce/deliver milk with her previous pregnancies.

All I have is her own information about experiences trying to nurse previous
babies.

It seems she had little or no information on how to build a good milk supply
or stimulate milk production and assumed she would not be able to breastfeed
and made little attempt at it. However even though she was using heavy
supplementation she was able to pump nearly an ounce of breast milk
(combined from both breasts) three weeks after one of her babies was born.

As I understand it the hormones of pregnancy can help to regenerate/repair
breast tissue and I have witnessed this with other mom's I have worked with.
It also seems that the degree to which this happens varies from mother to
mother.

So, this mother wishes to breastfeed as much as possible, knowing
supplementation may very likely be necessary and my main question is if
anyone has any suggestions for a mother with this kind of surgery. She is
wanting to use teas and herbs among other things. Has anyone used
medications with success, or would it be unproductive to stimulate receptor
growth before determining the ability to release the milk?

I would like to learn as much about this condition and what others have done
for it, before the lady delivers in May. Any links, articles, and/or
personal experience would be valuable.

Thanks,

Faith
