Breastfeeding after a Breast Reduction

Recently my cousin has become pregnant but when she was eighteen she received a breast reduction because of persistent back pain. It brought her cup size down from a DD to a small C. Now that she is pregnant she wants to breastfeed, and does not know if she would be able to or should.

Women, especially adolescents, are having breast reductions because of breast weight, chafing from bras, posture problems, and or suffer from back, neck or shoulder pain (Engstrom & Fridlund, 2000). The aim of the reduction is to alleviate physical and mental pain or suffering. It is important to choose the right method of surgery to achieve optimal results for future lactation (Engstrom & Fridlund, 2000). In articles have found that lactation is possible if there is no glandular tissue removal/interruption or detachment of the nipple during the procedure (Aillet, Watier, Chevrier, Pailheret, and Grall, 2002). Women who are going to have a breast reduction are strongly suggested to have all functioning breast tissue remain attached to the nipple to allow breastfeeding (Marshall, Callan, 1994). Also women who have had a reduction in adolescence can nurse their future infants with similar complications as the general breastfeeding women but special attention needs to be giv
en in providing adequate information about breastfeeding (Aillet, Watier, Chevrier, Pailheret, and Grall, 2002).

I have looked in the recent discussions and have not found any recent conversation and would like to know what you have seen in your experience with women who have had a breast reduction and breastfeeding.
