Dear Lactnet Friends:

Mary ask the $64,000 question (Does anyone remember that TV show?)

Marijuana is a BIG problem. There are no clear risks for a baby
breastfeeding from a mother who smokes marijuana.

The issue then becomes one of legality (marijuana is currently illegal in
the US), the risks of poor parenting if the parent(s) are high, the risks to
the baby of inhaling the smoke if people are smoking in the baby's
environment, and I wonder about the risk of SIDS which is higher when there
is tobacco smoke in the home. Is SIDS risk higher for any smoke in the home?

There just isn't enough research. And in cases of tragedy, there are
confounding variables: tobacco, alcohol, formula use, unsafe sleep surface,
parental obesity, unsafe sleep position, and other drugs.

Mothers are often more open to learning and wanting to be good mothers after
their baby is born....hate to miss the window.

There is no policy anywhere that I can find.

Being conscious and aware is not a cultural norm.

warmly,
