First, and just as an observation,  I have found the Ameda Elite to be the 
weakest hospital grade pump.  The older Lact-E or SMB is great, and on the other 
side of the table, Medela's Classic and Symphony get great results too.  

My customers in the past, who rented it against my recommendation (when 
needed for supply issues) did not fare well in milk production.
Also, and this is just a thought, perhaps mom could use a slanted shield like 
the one
made by Pumpinpal....Hey Susan B....are you out there?  (Susan may have some 
good comments on the nipples you describe and if the slanted shields might 
help).
