"since I missed the beginning, someone *please* tell me that they
reported
that one of the first ways to "get fat without really trying" is to be
formula"
fed.

Debbie,
I missed it too but don't count on it. Our local ABC ran a piece on preventing childhood obesity and of course no mention of breastfeeding!

"The Ad Council, a non-profit, exists through contributions. Guess who
some
of the contributors are? Yeah you guessed it. Nestle USA and Nestle
Purina
are listed as contributors by name and Bristol Myers Squibb (Mead
Johnson) and
Wyeth are listed as contributors by Class."

Valerie,
I had suspected as much when I visited their website and read how much they got in
corporate donations for their campaigns. Wasn't this known when first planning the BF promotion campaign? As if there weren't enough blatant sabotage of the campaign, it has to come from behind the scenes too.

Another response about BF and dental problems: At the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine Conference, research was presented that showed that caries was only a problem if the teeth were not cleaned after eating. Babies were at more risk of developing caries when on solids if they were breastfed than if they were formula fed. There was almost no incidence of caries if babies nursed through the night if the teeth were cleaned after the last meal. I can look in my Syllabus for details on the research if anyone is interested.
