Jean,
I am doing more teaching to mothers of hand expression. I think your
words yesterday of why it's good, including that it empowers mothers with
more skill to do for their baby what is important, especially when their
baby is too sleepy to latch well is so right. Also, I have to believe that
the hands (skin to skin) give better stimulation than the plastic pump
parts. I am also happy to see more colostrum expressed from the moms than
with the pump. It is a little labor intensive, esp when a mother feels
poorly (like today when I'm working with a mom with blood running because
she hemmoraged or if they have MgSo4 going) I always am looking for ways to
teach these things to mothers. Do you have a hand-out for moms that explains
how to do the hand expression? Has your grandchild done some pictures to
explain this yet???
Thanks for all you do for our community of lactation professionals that
helps us understand and do a better job for our patients.
