Carol,
I am sorry to hear about your daughter's difficulty with nursing. It is
very important for everyone to understand that an 'adequate' number of
stools and voids can be somewhat reassuring but _not_ confirmatory of
adequate weight gain. A baby who is not gaining can have plenty of stools.
I would bet that there is nothing wrong with this baby, and this baby
needs to be supplemented AD LIB, not some premeasured amount that
someone is guessing at. The principle of ad lib feeding at the breast
needs to be applied to supplementation as well. This baby should gain
more than 1 oz a day...if given the correct number of calories, the baby
will rapidly gain and catch up to where she should be.
I suspect that your daughter's problem with low milk supply has nothing
to do with watery or poor quality milk, but rather an insufficient
supply of good quality milk. The bypass likely has nothing to do with it
unless she is actively losing weight and is eating insufficient calories.
Likely she has another condition that is causing her low milk, which
needs to be evaluated. Given that she had a low supply with the first
baby, she is certainly at risk again this time.
