Diane Wiessinger wrote about a hospital's giving pumps out at 3 weeks:

"1) Lots of moms quit before 3 weeks and the hospital has spent money on
unnecessary equipment (this must mean the hospital pays for the pump. I
don't understand this part)."

I posted earlier about why my hospital gives pumps out to all BF mothers and
thought maybe I could explain the cost factor. This hospital may be like ours
and charge "per diem." This means that there is simply one basic daily charge
for patients. I think most places still do what we used to do--there would be
charge slips attached to *everything* so it mattered what supplies you used and
if you wanted a breastpump it would be on your bill. Now everybody pays the
same (unless extraordinary things are used) so the bill does not reflect whether
or not a mother received a breastpump. I do feel a bit badly about running up
hospital costs when a mother decides to wean right away because of minor
discomforts, but figure it's worth it for those occasions when having that pump
at home means an engorged mother will continue breastfeeding!

Someone also had noted that it would be better to teach the mothers
hand-expression. I agree, and in an ideal situation this would be preferable.
If only the LC's or skilled nurses would be the ones doing the teaching it would
be great, but we're a long way from that reality in our facility.
