Hi everyone
I have to agree with Dr Eglash and chime in that the nurse thinks she's solved the problem by using a shield, when it is usually just poor technique. I cringe when someone says "oh she has flat nipples" because they might just look flat. I'm pretty good at getting babies latched without shield but many are not. I'd almost rather start mom pumping to pull out the nipple rather than use a shield because NO ONE in my hospital will follow the care plan to pump and supplement if mom is given a shield.

Now on the other hand, I've seen the nipple shield as very helpful for premature or Late Preterm babies for the oral stability a shield provides. I've worked with moms who have babies who latch fairly well without one, but vastly improved milk transfer with a shield. I do agree there is a time and place to use one, and when to discontinue use but it's a hard call for someone who does not have a lot of experience with these situations.

Now if I can get the "inverted nipple" problem taken care of.....(the ones who "look inverted" but aren't)
LOL
