Dear All,

Catherine Watson wrote: "I generally downplay PCOS at an initial
consult unless the breasts look or palpate abnormal, or the baby is not
getting sufficient milk by test weights and history. I do warn moms to
keep their eyes open, but don't want every mom with PCOS to think
she won't make enough milk, when Lisa's preliminary research showed
it was only about 1/3 who had insufficient milk supply."

I am working on a breastfeeding article for a local mainstream
parenting magazine. I was going to quote a past editor of the South
African Medical Journal who said that the only reason he knew of that
would make a woman unable to breastfeed, would be a bilateral
mastectomy!

I can see now that I am sadly misinformed. I was aware from working
with moms that a very few are unable to produce a fully adequate milk
supply, but that is where my knowledge ends -- I am not an IBCLC, and
my breastfeeding training is more than 20 years out of date.

Could someone tell me what PCOS stands for please? It would also
help me to have as much information as possible on this condition. I
don't need to put it all into the article, but need to know the facts
myself. The magazine has "told the other side of the story" by
publishing stories by mothers who "couldn't" for one reason or another,
and want not to have to feel guilty. In most cases it is obvious that the
problems go back to bad medical management. I will concentrate on
pointing out those issues, but it seems I need to know about this other
condition too.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Warm wishes,
Pat Torngren (Retired CCE, Cape Town, SA)
