<<Here in California we both employ migrant workers from Mexico as
well as are surrounded by agriculture and pesticides in general-- the
potential for such exposure is great, and I often wonder if this is why I
seem to see so much inexplicable insufficient milk production while some LCs
seem to see so little in other parts of the country.

The county I live in, in Ohio, was just just ranked the worst in the nation
by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency). We have chemical plants up and
down the Ohio River, and it's just plain polluted here - air, water and
soil.

I have seen more than 2 dozen mothers (in the past 5 years) wanting to
breastfeed their cleft-affected babies. I always wonder how many more
cleft-affected babies there are out here, because certainly most of the
mothers either don't want to breastfeed, or they are discouraged from it and
don't know there are resources to help.

It's my guess that the chemical pollution has a lot to do with the cleft
issues. Most people I know haven't met this many cleft-affected babies.

Best wishes,
Heather "Sam" Doak
