It has been awhile since I posted on lactnet so I will reintroduce myself.
I have been an RN working in newborn nurseries; Levels 1,2, and 3 for 22
years. I have also worked on a M/B unit, done M/B home visits, attended
hundreds of deliveries, taught childbirth and breastfeeding classe, and am
currently working 20 hours a week as a hospital based lactation consultant
and 24 hours a week in the NICU Level 3. I have seen and experienced alot of
what is posted on Lactnet, but have tons to learn about the intricacies of
breastfeeding. I breastfed 4 children for a total of 54 months. My oldest
daughter is 22 and in l977 there were few resources to learn from.
Fortunately ,my neighbor was breastfeeding her second baby and I observed her
for 5 months before my daughter was born. We had troubles for the first few
weeks; 38 week, sleepy, jaundiced baby, flat nipples, mastitis, but recovered
from all and nursed until she weaned herself at 14 months. There are more
stories, but I'll save them for later.
I became an IBCLC in 1996. Was delighted to gain access to so much
information. Lactnet has been invaluable to me as a resource and I have
lurked daily for the past 11 months. Now, I am confused on the issue of
formula interference on the breastfed baby's ability to use the iron in
breastmilk and seek your wisdom. Does this occur when formula is introduced
so it would be important for parents to use iron-fortified formula? Is
formula included when the words " introduction of solid food" are used? ( I
understand that formula is in liquid form, but the chemistry involved could
effect the body the same way as a solid food. I do not know enough in this
area to assume it would be different.) In my breastfeeding class I want to
educate the parents in the pros and cons of supplementation and the
importance for proper management of breastfeeding. I want them to have
reasons not to suppplement in a weak moment! Thank you for your help. You
can e-mail me privately at MaryRN77@ aol.com or I'll read the answers on the
list. Sincerely, Mary Benson
