I have mother's permission to post this:
Mom has been exposed to Hepatitis C. She has been breastfeeding her six-day old infant and battling scabbed and cracked nipples. The nipple scabs opened today and she is concerned about transmitting the hep c via this blood to her baby. I referred mom to the baby's pediatrician for determination of safety regarding the infant's possible exposure to hep c from mom' bleeding nipples. Doc was unsure, but didn't think there was risk to the baby. Mom is coming in to the office tomorrow so we can work on breastfeeding. She is very anxious about this, and I'd like to be able to provide her with definitive information on risks of transmission. Any information or references would be greatly appreciated.
Kindly,
Leslie Cree, IBCLC
