<< Do any of you have
a good reference for this? A couple pages out of a book, or an article
that explains that this is an awful thing to do to a securely bonded baby?
I could find info about separation anxiety, etc., but no reference at all
to the effects of an extended separation. >>

Selma Fraiberg did some work on this; a documentary called Trauma, I believe,
on the effects of leaving babies/kids in hospital for treatment. The point
was that sudden separation from mom/caregiver had the same effects on a child
(as outwardly manifested) as other traumatizing experiences (death of parent,
horrible accident, etc.). I have seen the work before and read a little about
it too. However, I have nothing on handto cite at this time. Perhaps this
will help, though. Good work in helping to educate parents on the human
rights of children, as I see it.

I know this isnt quite bf related but as we do deal with parents this might be
a useful tool to have at some point to better insure informed consent....
