Having a granddaughter in an American NICU, I felt like the staff was
doing their very best, caring, loving and committed to doing their best.
However, was it the best care, probably not. By American hospital
standards yes, by what research says is best, no.
Kangaroo Mother Care was a vague proposition, involved "letting" the
mother hold the baby for a half an hour every other day, clothed.
Until the infant was "stable." Human Milk Fortifier was heavily used,
but can't be used outside of the hospital, so they sent babies home to
be fed breastmilk fortified with Neosure, whose canister says clearly
that it isn't supposed to be mixed.
They kept my granddaughter on that until she got smart and refused to
touch the stuff. My granddaughter is thin, as was her mother and
uncle and father, but that didn't impact their decision to make this
infant fatter.
Am I grateful that my granddaughter is alive, healthy and adorable,
yes. Do I wish she had been born in Sweden instead, certainly yes.
