I haven't received the latest JHL yet, but I wonder if it's from the researchers/related research to that reported a few months ago in:
Goldfield EC, Richardson MJ, Lee KG & Margetts S (2006). Coordination of sucking, swallowing, and breathing and oxygen saturation during early infant breast-feeding and bottle-feeding. Pediatr Res, 60(4), 450-455. Epub Aug 28.

I've posted the abstract for the cited report before.

In the teat flow rate trial Lisa Sandora, MA, CCC-SLP, IBCLC and I have been conducting, we found the flow rate of the Playtex Natural Latch appeared to be one that should be more compatible with BF oral behaviors (along with Dr. Brown -- either base width - and Playtex VentAire -- wide base width only; other types/brands mentioned in posts over the last day or two are associated with too fast flow for newborns). HOWEVER, parental feedback indicates the Natural Latch is less "reliable" and more related with subtle oral behaviors indicative of too fast flow. Since the Natural Latch requires the insertion of bag that holds the EBM or AIM, it may be that variations in bag insertion or filling affects flow rate. We're not sure...

We also found teat-to-teat variation within the same brand, so it's improtant for parents to be taught the behaviors to watch for that are signs of too fast flow, especially the more subtle ones.

I've offered before to forward an abstract of our findings. Will do so again for anyone contacting me via personal email.

Karen
