Nancy,

There are different kinds of breast shells. Not everything one hears
about shells is applicable
to all types of shells at all stages of lactation.

There are also different kinds of breast shields. Likewise, not
everything one hears about shields is applicable ot all types of shields
or all situations at all stages of lactation.

They are two completely different things. Both are simply tools that can
(usually temporarily) be useful in some situations.

Obviously, some previous staff person (or manufacturing rep) has gotten
to someone who has prenatal access and/or universal postpartum access to
the mothers. Would that we could get such universal agreement on ANY
point in US hospitals!

I have never read that shells <prevent engorgement> It may well be some
types can assist the mom with lessening edema in the areola during
engorgement, and thus help some.

I'm sure someone else will be able to give you some good up-to-date
references. One that comes to mind is the work of Paula Meier in regard
to the higher amount of milk transfer when premies who cannot fully grasp
the natural nipple use the soft clear silicone shields. I believe it was
in JHL February 2000 issue.

I look forward to seeing a lively discussion on this issue.
