I have often used the analogy of kissing (less of a shocker than SEX in
the school arena) for young moms- especially when they do that
grooooossss.... look. I bring up the thoughts they had when they were
"kids" and thought that kissing was so weird and thinking that they
would NEVER do that. I was forced by my teens to watch this silly movie
"Superstar" a few years ago. The main character is obsessed about her
first kiss and watches videos, practices on trees, and has some magic
idea about how it will all work. I explain that learning about
breastfeeding is like her learning about kissing. We can watch videos,
practice with dolls, etc. Then the baby arrives and sometimes it takes a
few tries to get it right- just like with your first kiss when you bump
noses or click teeth. Teens often remember that silly movie and their
first kiss.
I also have so many comments on weaning when babies have teeth, that I
often find myself asking women "Men have teeth don't they?" That is
usually followed by silence then a moment of "eureka" and laughing. I
don't think I would do that one in a school setting either!
