Women can have very individual reactions to the oxytocin release. When it contracts the smooth muscles of the ducts, it can also affect other smooth muscle, sometimes creating a wave of nausea or diarrhea, or a brief headache. The hormones are very high in the early weeks, but as the receptors become more attuned, the hormonal spikes are less dramatic and some of these early transitional side-effects also calm down.
