While I won't dispute Hale's findings, I will just say that I nursed while
on the suppositories. I think one has to wonder whether or weaning is
eminent (for an older child) or if the pregnancy is more important at the
time. To me, my child was then only about 18 months, I had lost two babies
doing the oral (3 total), I did a ton of research on WebMD about the
suppositories and all the findings showed that the IM and the supp. were the
best modes of transfer. When I started with the supp. then I kept the last
pregnancy, now science says that's just the luck of the draw, but I don't
think so. I will say that my milk seemed to get lost quicker on the supp.
than on the oral, so while Hale isn't sure of it's safety, I would say that
the body probably takes care of that by decreasing milk supply to just about
zero. My toddler lost interest in nursing and I was able to supplement him
with other beverages. Just don't ask me how much he's nursing now!
