When I get this comment from new moms and I sense that they are very
firm on wanting to avoid it, I like to point out that when baby is
comfort sucking at the breast, that additional stimulation (over and
above the stimulation that occurs with milk transfer) may help to
make the transition to full milk supply occur sooner and more
smoothly. As long as baby is doing it in a way that is physically
comfortable for mom and she is seeing good deep jaw excursions for
much of the feeding, there is no harm in letting baby comfort at the
breast and the payoff for her may well be a smoother transition a
couple days later. I find that many parents who may object to the
idea of baby "using mom as a pacifier" will accept this for a few
days at least. My hope is that by the time the milk volume does
increase, mom may learn to like the idea of nursing for more than
just nutrition whereas debating the question of mom as pacifier at
the beginning may fall on deaf ears or even make her question other
advice we give.

Winnie
