We just started a breastfeeding support group at our hospital about 4 weeks
ago. We have a scale available, and I co-lead the group with the social
worker on our unit. She does the "group" stuff, and I answer the clinical
questions. So far, we have had between 1-5 moms. We meet weekly, however
have had some weather problems in the midwest lately, so attendance today
was minimal. We surveyed our families prior to starting the group so we
could design it to meet their needs. It has been so much fun!

Subject: Breastfeeding Support Groups

I know that there are several hospitals here in the chicago area which
have breastfeeding support groups that meet in the hospital. I used to
work at a place that had weekly meetings and it was great to get moms to
come to the group when they are a few weeks into breastfeeding and still
unsure. It was a great opportunity to have someone who didn't really
need a consultation, come in and have the baby evaluated after the
meeting. We could also do a weight check if needed after the meeting. It
was so popular that eventually we had to break up the group into "less
than three months" and over three months because the moms of older
babies just wanted to chit-chat! Here in my "new" endeavor, we have
started a breastfeeding support group at one of the family practice
clinics, only meets monthly, but from the core group, we've got 3 very
dedicated moms who are now being trained as peer counselors.
